Ronna Kamel (Southwest class of 1965) and I got married in December 1969 . We have a Son Seth, a daughter Elizabeth and Four grandchildren. Seth is married to Heather Teplin (Milwaukee), They have two sons Max and Cody. Elizabeth is married to Jeremy Bayer (Woodbridge, VA) They have a son Ethan, and a daughter Karley. I opened a Mail Boxes Etc in 1992, in Maple Grove, MN. In 2001 the name was changed to "The UPS Store". It is still there but I retired in June of 2013, Ronna had previously retired in 2009. I am enjoying retirement while looking after my father who is now 94 years old. (A Timex: takes a licking and keeps on Ticking) We have done some traveling, but not as much as I would like to yet. I have also done a little computer networking in some of The UPS Stores. I seem to keep busy. I will not be able to attend the 50th Reunion as we will be attending our Grandson's Bar Mitzvah. Maybe the next one. Regards to you all, have a great reunion celebration. As it turns out, I will be able to attend the Friday Evening Event at Park Tavern. See you all There. |

It was great to recently see and reconnect with so many classmates from 60 years ago. Still every time I log onto Sparks’s ( George Kohan) SLPHS webpage and click on “In Memoriam” I’m stuck by the growing number of losses, those who couldn’t make the reunion. This is a price of getting old. Certainly every one listed is fondly remembered by many. There are four I reflected on especially. John A. “Butch” Ilstrup, Billy Jacobson, Dave Lee, and Tom “Mouse” Bracher. Each, the among others, marks a special friendship and impact for me. My family moved from Hibbing to St. Louis Park when I started 5th grade at Park Knoll. Butch was my neighbor and first friend (we lived on Xylon, he lived on Yukon). Butch was a kind, gentle and funny guy. His low key demeanor covered for a mischievous spirit and winning personality. He was loyal and ever upbeat. He was killed in Viet Nam on February 9, 1968. I never expected it could happen to him. Before he shipped out, while home on a short leave, we acquired fake IDs and had several fine nights out. We pledged to take a celebratory road trip when he came home. Obviously it didn’t happen. The term quirky could have been invented for Billy. He was “goofy” in the very best definition of the term. His off center approach to life sometimes disguised a penetrating intellect. He brought an innocent enthusiasm to every adventure. No matter what trouble might be lurking he proceeded unafraid and ready to dance with it or around it. It was impossible not to genuinely like and appreciate “Billy the Jake”. In my last conversation with him, shortly before his death, his core humanity was still on full display. Dave and I were friends in high school and stay connected for a few years after. Then we lost track. When I moved to Colorado we reconnected. I discovered the same good old Dave I so enjoyed 40 years prior. We played some golf and both cheated just a bit. He was a survivor on the full meaning of the term having live through an electrocution and pancreatic cancer. I thought he was indestructible. But clearly not quite. And Mouse! Unique and special in so many ways. A large physical presence but a gentle, faithful friend. He most certainly could have been intimidating but just didn’t know how.He did know how to be a kind and caring soul of the first order. He was a prankster whose pranks became legend. He always seemed so comfortable and confident in just being “Mouse”. And that made him so comfortable to engage no matter how much time had passed. Only on like him! The passage of time and changes in life’s demands has permitted me to spend a bit more time engaged with few important classmates, Tommy Sipkins, Bob Stein, Georgie Kohan, Dave Howe, Bob Harada, Tim Long, Bill Gresko, Bruce Smith…And the reunion caused me to pledge to reconnect with others. While serving as a husband for 55 years, Dad to two adults and Papa to two grandson and annoying academic emeritus, I take the opportunity to consider all the people who have shaped the life I’ve been so fortunate to lead, with an occasional scotch and cigar on our back deck (which is precisely what I’m doing as I write this). Scotch and cigar or not I highly recommend this as a useful pause from your regular adventures. Mike Martin |

Greetings How can it be 50 years since we walked the halls of learning of St. Louis Park High School. I have had a nice life. I have been married to Jon Mathisrud for 47 years. We have three beautiful daughters all married to very nice men with jobs. We have five very active grandchildren who we thoroughly enjoy. My 91 year-old mother still lives in St. Louis Park. If I have spare time, carving, quilting, rosemaling, and painting are activities I enjoy. Jon and I entertain family and friends at our cabin on Lake Superior near Lutsen, MN. Looking forward to the 50th Reunion to see classmates and old friends. |
